We lie to deceive ourselves, to console others, we lie for mercy, we lie to fight fear, to encourage ourselves, to hide our and somebody else’s misery. We lie for love and honesty. We lie because of freedom. Lying is a trait of our patriotism and the proof of our innate intelligence. We lie creatively, imaginatively and inventively.

Update: Scheinbar sind sich die Nobels nicht ganz einig, die offizielle Meldung nennt Tomas Tranströmer als Preisträger. Nun gut, ich kenne beide nicht wirklich. Aber das Zitat von Cosic läuft mir gerade gut rein. Also bleibt es erstmal so stehen.
Update II: Inzwischen steht unter nopelprizeliterature.org nicht mehr ein Mirror der offiziellen Seite nobelprize.org mit der Falschmeldung von Cosics Prämierung, sondern das Bekennerschreiben einer Gruppe serbischer Aktivisten, die auf Cosics ambivalente Rolle in der Geschichte der Region aufmerksam machen wollen:
We have registered the domain of this obviously hoax site on the 5th October 2011, as a symbolic reminder of that day eleven years ago, when Serbia missed a historic opportunity to create a different and better world. Today again, Serbia turns to war, terror and deadly kitsch of the nineties, violence towards diversity, nationalist conservatism and dishonest orthodoxy. We believe the political activity of Dobrica Cosic is still deeply intertwined with this hazardous value system, which does not cease to threaten us all. Terrible consequences of decades of Mr. Cosic’s political, literary and public activity are felt to this day, both by his own country and throughout the region.
Dobrica Cosic is not a recipient of the Nobel Prize, although the general public in Serbia, and he himself, believed he is for 15 full minutes. We find some solace in that fact.
Ich jedenfalls bin gnadenlos drauf reingefallen, trotz meines ersten Reflexes: Ist das nicht der Slobodan Milosevic der Balkanliteratur? Aber dann glaubte ich der vermeintlichen Schwedischen Akademie mehr als meinem Instinkt. Und lernte dazu.
